National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries and library professionals play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities. Special themed days include: Monday, April 20:  Right to Read Day; Tuesday, April 21: National Library Workers Day; Wednesday, April 22: National Library Outreach Day; Thursday, April 23: Take Action for Libraries Day. Also of note this year, The American Library Association is hosting a “Show Us Your Library Joy” contest where you could win $150 Visa gift card. The Friends of Mendon Public Library are once again holding their spring flower sale fundraiser. And, as convenient as always:  pick up is the day before Mother’s Day!  Orders can be placed and paid for online (see enclosed link) or using a printed form and pay by cash or check, made payable to “The Friends of MPL”, at the library (view or print the enclosed form.) This is a great way to support the library and enjoy sharing some spring color.  >> Payment is due at the time of order. >> Deadline to order is Saturday, April 25th. >> Pick-up will be at the library on Saturday, May 9th between 9 AM and 12 PM.

Cookies, Tea, Art, & Stories: Drop-In, Meet the Artists, & Hear a Story

All ages are encouraged to drop by the Mendon Public Library on Wednesday, April 22nd, from 2 – 3 PM for cookies, tea (hot and cold), stories, and art appreciation. Our artist neighbors from Pinehurst Senior Living will be displaying their work at the library through the month of April. Today, they will be on hand to answer questions about their art and talk about their creative process. For little ones, we will offer a simple creative station and a few story book read alouds about art. Registration not required; just stop in!

Our library’s gallery wall is currently displaying artwork created by residents from Pinehurst Senior Living Community. The eight artists create in a variety of mediums: basketry, etching, watercolor, acrylic and pencil. Each work is unique and beautiful. This exhibit, on display through the end of April, includes a special program: “Cookies, Tea, Art, & Stories: Drop-In, Meet the Artists, & Hear a Story” will take place on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2 – 3 PM. All ages are encouraged to drop by!

Kids through Adults: Learn about plastics and microplastics with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) on Saturday, April 25th, 1 – 2:30 PM here at the library. This interactive session explores plastics and microplastics, their sources, their environmental and health impacts, and practical ways we can reduce plastic use and exposure. Preschoolers with their families through Seniors:  Welcome spring with us at Pinehurst Senior Living Community, on Thursday, May 7th, from 10 – 10:50 AM. Enjoy stories, songs, crafts, and a special treat. This month we will be reading some spring books and planting seeds to take home for your gardens. NEW: TONIES Collection at Mendon Public Library

Thanks to The Friends of Mendon Public Library, our children and their families can enjoy a new collection of screen-free audio players for kids! The Tonies collection includes 3 loanable Tonie boxes (these are the players) that come with headphones and 1 storytelling character. Each character contains a unique story, that plays when placed on a Tonie box. Our new collection also has 41 individual Tonie characters, each with their own unique and educational story. Tonie character stories range in target age up to about 10 years.  The characters can be checked out and used on your own Tonie box, or on a library Tonie box.

All teens and tweens are invited to come celebrate the grand opening of our new Teen Corner on Thursday, July 11th at 1:00 PM. We’ll have bubble tea, games, prizes, and more! State Assemblymember Jen Lunsford will help us with a ribbon cutting at 1:30 PM. We’ll also be unveiling our brand new, Manga book section!
