This month, Mendon Public Library is featuring a collection of Breyer Horses that belong to Livonia resident, Susanne Allen. Susanne told us:
“I’ve loved horses for as long as I can remember. I got my first horse at age 8 – a bay Welsh Pony. I had a small collection of horse statues before then. One was a beautiful white ceramic foal that was a gift from my grandmother. Another was the Breyer jumping horse model, which I carried around everywhere. That model ended up with the front legs broken off and lost, and I was so disappointed that my father had to make new wooden legs for it.”
“Every birthday I asked for Breyer models and horse books. I first preferred bay models, like my pony (brown with black mane & tail), then enjoyed collecting flashy pintos and appaloosas, and now have an affinity for white models.“
Susanne mostly collects Breyer models and has over 200. She also has a collection of large ceramic horses that live above her kitchen cabinets.
“I no longer have real horses, so I dusted off my collection and am enjoying displaying them at area libraries,”
The horses have already stopped in Avon, Livonia, and Lima public libraries. They will be visiting the Henrietta Library next year. Susanne’s other hobbies include collecting and reading vintage Scholastic horse stories, creative writing, and painting.
NOTE: Horse lovers may also wish to check out our upcoming program in November featuring how horses are helping Veterans at Equicenter: “Veterans, Wild Mustangs and Equicenter: Supporting Connection & Healing,” Thursday, November 5, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM. All Ages. Click HERE to register.
